Bearing Oil 460 (Steam Cylinder)

We formulate this straight bearing oil from a select blend of solvent-refined mineral base oils. Specifically, Bearing Oil 460 works perfectly for lubricating bearings and motions, or as a general-purpose lubricant. Additionally, it performs well in higher ambient temperatures to reduce total lubricant loss. Because straight bearing oils are universal, you can easily replace compounded bearing oils with them.

Viscosity and flow behaviour are the main differences between 220 and 460, although their lubrication properties are otherwise very similar. In fact, 460 is thicker at room temperature, but it flows freely when heated. Consequently, this quality makes it ideal for miniature steam applications, particularly where systems do not employ conventional wick or felt pads to draw oil into the bearings.

Ultimately, Bearing Oil 460 suits miniature steam engines because its viscous nature allows it to pass through bearings slower than ISO 220, thereby extending the time between oiling periods.

Applications:

Bearing Oil 460 used by locomotives operating where higher ambient temperature conditions requires the use of a thicker oil.

Provides lubrication to the bearings, motions and used as a general-purpose lubricant with total loss systems.

Can be used for bearings, gears, slides, and general railway applications as well as for use in older types of railway rolling stock axle boxes with plain bearings. Recommended for their ability to flow with worsted wool fibre or cotton wick lubricators often found on traction engines and railway rolling stock.
