The Budget And Heating Oil

The budget offered little help with the cost of heating oil. Here is everything we can gather from it:

Tariff Suspension: The government scrapped import tariffs on kerosene (currently 4%) for two years, running until 31 December 2028 see my last post for more information

Energy Payout: To help lower costs for off-grid rural and agricultural properties relying on oil-fired heating, the government is providing a direct £100 cash payment to households in Council Tax bands A–D.

  • Who qualifies? Households in Council Tax bands A to D across England (roughly 80% of properties). Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are also rolling out equivalent support schemes.

  • When do you get it? Councils will transfer money directly to bank accounts starting in January 2027.

  • How do you receive it? You will receive payments automatically, primarily through the direct debit details your local council holds on file.

  • Higher bands (E–H): If you fall into bands E–H but face financial hardship, English councils can offer targeted assistance using a £100 million discretionary fund.

Related Fuel Measures: The 5p fuel duty cut and freeze is extended to 1 July 2027, and the 3.7p cut to red diesel is extended for six months to 1 July 2027.
