Winter Is Coming

Winter Is Coming – El Nino.

Winter Is Coming – The unfolding record-breaking El Niño event will bring wetter, stormier, and milder conditions to the UK through late autumn and early winter, leading into very cold weather from January to February. A long, very hot summer will follow

Coming Weather Impacts

  • Increased rainfall. Higher chances of wet and stormy weather from October through December, which may help ease ongoing summer drought conditions but simultaneously elevate the risk of localized flooding.

  • Milder start. The early part of winter is projected to trend warmer and windier than average due to combined ocean heat signals.

  • Late-winter uncertainty. While early winter favours mild westerlies, historical patterns and a potentially weakening stratospheric polar vortex later in the season leave a modest window open for colder snaps, frost, or snow by early 2027, though forecasters have not yet confirmed this

Wider Effects

  • Global food supply. Severe droughts and weather anomalies in major agricultural regions worldwide driven by this super El Niño threaten reduced global crop yields (such as rice, wheat, and coffee) and subsequent price volatility in UK supermarkets.

  • Global temperatures. The massive release of ocean heat is predicted to make 2027 one of the warmest years on record globally.
