Description

Raw Linseed Oil

Raw Linseed Oil. It’s suitable for replacing natural sheen that wood may lose after long periods in the sun. This Linseed Oil replaces natural oils removed by weathering. Use internally or externally on unpolished surfaces.

“Raw” linseed oil is just that. Linseed oil mercilessly squeezed from flax seed and packaged with no additional additives or preservatives. This oil dries very slowly, taking weeks to fully cure. You should limit its use to the insides of wood gutters, chopping blocks, sawhorses, and other items exposed to the elements where drying time is not a consideration.

If you require a drying times please use our Boiled Linseed Oil.

HOW TO USE

Preparation

Ensure the surface to be treated is clean and dry and any previous finish must be thoroughly removed before using Raw Linseed Oil. For ease of application dilute the first few coats with Turpentine or a substitute (up to 30%), or alternatively heat the the Linseed Oil by placing it in a container and standing it in a bowl of hot water that can be frequently renewed, this is because it will help with penetration.

If heating Raw Linseed Oil, DO NOT dilute with turpentine. Rub well into the wood using a lint-free cotton cloth so has not to cause a fire. After about 20-30 minutes, wipe off the excess with a clean lint-free cloth. Failure to do so will prevent penetration of future coats and leave a sticky surface. Repeat the previous steps once or twice at a few days’ interval, this is because you will need to allow the product to totally cure. Apply a final coat of undiluted Linseed Oil, again wiping off any excess. Allow this final coat to harden for a few days before use.

A minimum of three coats is recommended. A light rubbing in between coats with Ultra Fine Steel Wool (Grade 0000) will improve results. If the surface becomes damaged, work in a new coat.

Important

Oil finishes bring out the natural colours of timber. A wet surface will be an indication of the final colour. Always test the product on a spare surface or inconspicuous area for colour, compatibility and end result.

Cleaning and maintenance

Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and buff dry. Re-oil as and when required, depending upon usage.
