Decking oil – application and precautions

Decking oil Application

The sun has arrived! At time of writing it is 20ºc and we are getting ready to go home and enjoy the evening sun. Personally I enjoy sitting on my decking enjoying the garden with a cool drink. However, I also want my decking to look good and be protected throughout the year. We have developed Rye Decking oil to perform exactly this task. We sell decking oil to a large number of customers and always receive high praise for the quality. However, our office staff receive a large volume of calls with questions about how to use the oil correctly. To help alleviate this (and to save you a phone call), our experts have developed a handy, how to guide, which should answer most basic questions. If you enjoyed this article or found it useful, please share it around. Hope you all are having a great summer!

How to use:

Preparation
Ensure the timber is clean, dry and free from previous finishes. If possible and for best results lightly sand and clean the wood.

Application
Apply a generous coating of Decking Oil with a paint brush or roller or spray. Allow to penetrate for 30-40 minutes then required apply the second coat without waiting for the first to totally dry. Continue to apply more coats of Decking Oil until the timber no longer absorbs the oil. Pooling is a sign that the timber had absorbed all it can. Wipe any excess with a lint-free cotton cloth and allow to dry for 24 hours before using the decking.

Important
Oil finishes bring out the natural colours of timber. A wet surface will be an indication of the final colour. Always test the product on a spare surface or inconspicuous area for colour, compatibility and end result. If you having problems spraying, you can thin with white spirit.
Cleaning and maintenance
To keep the finish Rye Oil Ltd suggests that general maintenance clean with Rye Oil’s Timber Cleaner. We recommend cleaning once a year as routine maintenance. To maintain the overall finish reapply every 3-4 years.

Precautions
Wear suitable clothing and protective gloves when using Cedar Treat. Store Cedar Treat at a temperature above 5°C. Always replace the lid otherwise the oil can deteriorate. Oily cloths can self-combust. Do not leave impregnated cloths in bundles. Before discarding the cloths lay them flat outside to dry to avoid a fire hazard. May not be suitable for some hardwoods. Please contact us for advice on your specific type of hardwood. On most hard woods we would suggest Rye Oil’s Danish Oil or Pure Tung Oil.
